Review: OZZFEST Sledgehammers Fans, And They Eat It Up

Ernest A. Jasmin of The News Tribune reviewed the opening night of this year's Ozzfest, which kicked off Thursday (June 29) at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington. An excerpt from his review follows:

OZZY OSBOURNE headlined his yearly metal gala, Ozzfest, as the tour kicked off its 11th year at Auburn’s White River Amphitheatre on Thursday.

And he made up for last year — when he stormed off stage during BLACK SABBATH's set after his voice went out — with a fan-pleasing set that focused on post-SABBATH numbers "I Don't Know", "Mr. Crowley" and "Flying High Again".

SYSTEM OF A DOWN, DISTURBED, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, HATEBREED, LACUNA COIL and DRAGONFORCE also played the main stage, with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, a band fronted by Ozzy's crony Zakk Wylde, headlining a second stage that featured ATREYU, UNEARTH, BLEEDING THROUGH and others earlier in the afternoon.

It all added up to about 14 hours of heavy metal mayhem. And around 15,000 excited metalheads ate up every moment.

Among the main stage highlights were AVENGED SEVENFOLD's performance of PANTERA's "Walk", a tribute to slain guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. Fans pumped their fists as they shouted back the choppy refrain. "Re! Spect! Walk!"

Chicago's DISTURBED galvanized the crowd with an hour of rhythmic metal that included "Liberate", "Stupify" and other fan favorites.

"We must never forget the people who made us who we are," lead singer David Draiman said, paying homage to Ozzy before finishing the set with "Stricken" and "Sickness".
